Is Palo Santo endangered, and is this sustainably sourced?

We hear this often, and the short answer is reassuring. The true Palo Santo we use, Bursera graveolens, is listed by the IUCN as a species of least concern. It is frequently confused with a different tree, Bulnesia sarmientoi, which is the species facing pressure. We collect only wood that has died naturally and fallen to the forest floor, sourced through a vetted partner in Peru, where this practice is the standard. Because the fragrant oils only develop during years of natural aging, choosing fallen wood is both the responsible choice and the reason our sticks smell so rich.

How do I light and use a Palo Santo stick?

Hold one end of the stick at a slight downward angle and light the tip, letting it burn for about 20 to 30 seconds until you have a steady flame. Gently blow out the flame so the wood glows and releases its fragrant smoke. Waft the smoke through your space, moving toward corners and doorways, then rest the stick in a fire-safe dish, where it will self-extinguish. A single stick can be relit many times across multiple sessions.

Is it safe to burn around my children and pets?

We always suggest burning in a well-ventilated space with a window open or a fan running, and keeping sessions short. Cats, birds, and small pets are more sensitive to aromatic smoke than we are, so give them an easy way to leave the room and avoid burning near their resting areas. Keep lit sticks out of reach, use a fire-safe dish, and never leave a glowing stick unattended. Anyone with asthma or respiratory sensitivity should take extra care or burn in a more open area.

Why does this Palo Santo smell stronger than other sticks I have tried?

It comes down to the wood itself. We use only naturally fallen Bursera graveolens that has aged on the forest floor for several years, which is the window when the resin and essential oils reach their fullest. We then hand-select each stick for density and high resin content. That is why our sticks release a deep, warm aroma of citrus, pine, and sweet resin rather than a thin or faint scent.
