🌲 Grow a Dawn Redwood, the Living Fossil
The dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is one of the great stories in the plant world: known only from the fossil record and presumed extinct for millions of years, it was rediscovered alive in central China in the 1940s. Today you can grow your own from seed. This fast-growing deciduous conifer brings soft, feathery green foliage in spring and summer, a glowing red-bronze in autumn, and a beautifully tapered trunk that stands out all winter.
Dawn redwood is prized for its speed and grace, adding around 2 to 3 feet of height a year and shaping itself into an elegant, symmetrical pyramid. It is at home as a landscape specimen, a fast privacy screen, or one of the finest deciduous conifers for bonsai. These premium seeds give home growers, landscapers, and bonsai artists a direct way to raise a piece of living history.
Dawn redwood is a living fossil that, since its rediscovery, has thrived in cultivation across the temperate world, happy in the cool, moist conditions it evolved in. We partner with a vetted seed farm that grows it to the same soil-first, biological standard that defines our own Colorado farm. Every packet we ship is held to that standard and backed by the same 100% money-back guarantee as everything we carry.
🌿 From the Sacred Plant Co Farm. Sacred Plant Co is a soil-first farm. Our own farm in Colorado earned a groundbreaking Haney Soil Health Score of 25.4, a number that surpasses the soil biology measured in pristine forest land. That score is the heart of who we are. We believe healthier soil grows more complex, more vital plants, and that philosophy is the reason we hold every seed and herb we carry to the same biological standards.
🌱 A Tree for Every Kind of Grower
A rare deciduous conifer for bonsai, offering soft needles, striking trunk taper, and seasonal change that few bonsai subjects can match. It takes well to pruning and wiring.
With rapid, upright growth and a dense pyramidal form, a row of dawn redwoods makes a graceful, fast-establishing screen.
As a focal point in a large garden, park, or lawn, its symmetrical shape and brilliant fall color earn their space, and it even tolerates damp, low-lying sites.
Our 250-seed pack is built for groves and growers who want to raise a stand of this ancient species from scratch.
🌲 Starting Your Seeds
Dawn redwood seeds wake up best with a start that echoes their native winters. Soak the seeds for about 24 hours and set aside any that float, then give the rest a cold-moist stratification of 30 to 60 days in the refrigerator in lightly moist sand or a damp paper towel. Surface sow the stratified seeds onto a moist, well-draining mix and leave them uncovered, since even a thin layer of cover reduces germination and the seeds respond to light. Keep the mix consistently moist with bright light and good humidity, and protect tender first-year seedlings from frost until they are established. Because seeds reward generous sowing, we suggest starting more than the number of trees you ultimately want and growing on the strongest. Our dawn redwood growing guide walks through the biology of every step, and our beginner's guide to growing bonsai from seed is a great companion if you plan to train one.
Building a redwood collection? Many growers pair these with our coastal redwood seeds and our giant sequoia redwood seeds to grow all three legendary redwoods side by side.

Planting & Handling Notes
These are horticultural tree seeds intended for planting. As with all seeds, they are not for human or animal consumption, and they are best kept out of reach of children and pets. Dawn redwood grows quickly into a large tree with a wide, spreading root system, so give it generous room to show off its form, away from foundations and overhead lines, or keep it in a container or as bonsai while it is young.
First-year seedlings are tender despite the tree's eventual cold hardiness, so a sheltered, humid, brightly lit start and protection from frost set them up to flourish. A few weeks of strong early growth before transplanting outdoors makes all the difference.
Seeds are a natural product. Germination depends on proper soaking and cold-moist stratification, consistent care, and your local growing conditions. For planting and horticultural use only.
Our policy is simple: if you aren't happy, send it back and receive a full refund. Anytime, for any reason.
🌿 Frequently Asked Questions
Is dawn redwood a good tree for bonsai?
Yes, and it is one of our favorites for it. Dawn redwood is a rare deciduous conifer, so it offers something most bonsai trees cannot: soft, feathery needles in spring and summer, a glowing red-bronze in autumn, and then a bare, elegantly tapered trunk that shows off its structure all winter. It responds well to pruning and wiring, which makes it forgiving for beginners and rewarding for experienced artists. If you plan to train one, our beginner's guide to growing bonsai from seed is a great place to start.
How cold-hardy is dawn redwood, and where will it grow?
Dawn redwood is remarkably tough. It thrives across USDA zones 4 to 8, handling cold winters as well as heat and humidity, and it grows happily in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-draining soil. It even tolerates damp, low-lying spots that many trees dislike. Give it room to spread and it will reward you with fast, graceful growth of around 2 to 3 feet a year.
Do dawn redwood seeds need cold stratification?
Yes, a cold-moist stratification is the reliable way to wake these seeds up. We recommend 30 to 60 days: soak the seeds for about 24 hours and set aside any that float, then keep the rest in lightly moist sand or a damp paper towel in a sealed bag in the refrigerator. This mimics the winter dormancy the species evolved with in the forests of central China and shifts the seeds out of dormancy so they germinate more evenly. Our dawn redwood growing guide explains the why and the how in full.
