🌿 Horehound Herb, Cut & Sifted

Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is one of the oldest bitter herbs in the western kitchen and apothecary, and ours is cut & sifted to roughly 3 to 8 mm for clean, even extraction. We dry the leaf and flowering tips at low temperature to protect color and the herb's mint-family aromatics, then sift to a consistent grade that measures and brews predictably. The flavor is classic and forthright: tasting notes of gentian, dandelion, and straw, firmly bitter and herbaceous, the backbone of traditional teas, soothing syrups, and pre-meal bitters.

Horehound is native to the Mediterranean basin and temperate Europe, and it grows best in the dry, sunny, well-drained ground it evolved in. We source ours from a vetted partner farm in Albania, where those conditions let the plant develop the bitter aromatic character it is prized for. Every lot of our Horehound Herb is tested by an independent third-party laboratory before release, screened for microbial contaminants, heavy metals, and identity and foreign matter. We publish the signed Certificate of Analysis for each lot we test on our lab testing page. Backed by our 100% money-back guarantee. You can read more in our guide, Horehound: A Bitter Remedy with a Sweet History.

Naturally caffeine-free and kitchen-ready, horehound pairs beautifully with softer herbs. It is a natural companion to Mullein Leaf for body and to Damiana Herb as a warm, aromatic counterpoint in evening blends.

🌱 From the Sacred Plant Co Farm. Sacred Plant Co is a soil-first farm. Our own farm in Colorado earned a groundbreaking Haney Soil Health Score of 25.4, a number that surpasses the soil biology measured in pristine forest land. That score is the heart of who we are. We believe healthier soil grows more complex, more potent plants, and that philosophy is the reason we hold every herb we carry to the same third-party, per-lot testing standard.

🍵 How to use it

🫖 As a tea. Use about 1 tsp (≈1 g) per 8 oz / 240 mL hot water. Steep 7 to 10 minutes, then strain. Steep on the shorter side and add lemon or a little honey for a softer cup.
🍯 As a soothing syrup. Brew a strong tea, then add sugar or honey 1:1 by volume. Cool and bottle for easy dosing, a traditional preparation for the throat.
🌿 In bitters traditions. Use as a firm, classic bitter in pre-meal formulas alongside citrus peel and warming spices.
📦 Keeping it fresh. Store airtight, cool, and dark. Best within 12 to 18 months. Small-batch packed for freshness you can see and smell.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What does horehound taste like, and how can I make a smoother cup?

Expect a firmly bitter, herbaceous cup with mint-family aromatics and tasting notes of gentian, dandelion, and straw. For a softer brew, steep on the shorter side and add a squeeze of lemon or a little honey. Blending it with mullein or damiana rounds the edges nicely.
